Is PUBG Free?

Yes. PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS went free to play on PC and consoles in January 2022 and has remained free ever since. There is no purchase required to download the game, play Battle Royale, or access any of its maps and modes. The game is funded through optional cosmetic microtransactions — weapon skins, outfit crates, and the seasonal Survivor Pass.

None of these affect gameplay. Every weapon, vehicle, and map is available to all players on equal terms, and the Survivor Pass includes a free track that rewards cosmetics and currency simply for playing. The premium track is entirely optional and cosmetic. On PC, PUBG is distributed through Steam and the Epic Games Store — both are official storefronts, and both share the same PC matchmaking pool.

How to Install PUBG

  1. Pick your launcher. PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is free on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Both give you the same game — choose whichever store you already use.
  2. Install the launcher. If you don't have one yet, download Steam or the Epic Games Launcher from its official site and install it.
  3. Create or sign in to your account. A free Steam or Epic Games account is required. Sign in, or create one and verify your email address.
  4. Find PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS. In Steam, search the store for "PUBG" or open your Library. On Epic, search for "PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS" and open the game page.
  5. Click "Play Game" / "Get". On Steam, click the green Play Game button. On Epic, click Get. This adds PUBG to your library permanently.
  6. Install the game. Go to your Library, select PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, choose an install location, and click Install. The download is roughly 40 GB.
  7. Launch and play. Once installed, click Play. Complete the Basic Training tutorial before joining a live match.

Getting Started

  1. Complete Basic Training first. PUBG's tutorial is a 17-chapter checklist that covers movement, looting, combat, Blue Zone survival, vehicle driving, and teammate revive. It is the fastest way to learn the controls without dying to a real player.
  2. Drop away from the flight path. Hot drops like Pochinki, School, and Military Base put you in a fight within seconds. For your first matches, land at quieter compounds on the edge of the map.
  3. Loot with a priority order. Armour and a helmet come first — they decide whether you survive the first fight. Then a primary weapon (AR or SMG), then healing items, then attachments.
  4. Learn the blue zone. The blue zone deals increasing damage the longer you stay outside it. Check the map often and move early — most beginner deaths are to the zone, not to enemies.
  5. Use the shooting range. PUBG's training mode includes a live shooting range where you can test every weapon and attachment without pressure.
  6. Play Normal mode before Ranked. Normal matches are filled with bots and players of all skill levels, making them far more forgiving.

Useful Tips

  • 🪂 Learn the parachute dive. Holding forward while diving gets you to the ground faster. Release the parachute at the last possible moment, then glide to your target.
  • 🎧 Sound is your best weapon. Footsteps, gunshots, and vehicles carry a long way. A good headset tells you which direction a player is coming from.
  • 🛡️ Always be healing. Start healing the moment you break line of sight, not when you are already safe.
  • 🚗 Vehicles are cover and transport. A car or bike is the fastest way to rotate into the circle, and a destroyed vehicle is a solid piece of cover.
  • 🎯 Control your recoil. PUBG's recoil is heavy. Pull down gently while firing in full auto, and tap-fire at range.
  • 🗺️ Plan your rotation early. Do not wait for the circle to start closing. Look at the map, pick a route with cover, and move before the zone forces you into the open.
  • 🏠 Use buildings carefully. Buildings are strong cover, but they are also death traps if you camp in a corner.
  • ⚙️ Lower graphics for frames. Competitive players lower shadow and post-processing settings to increase FPS.
  • 🆓 The Survivor Pass has a free track. You do not need to buy the premium pass to earn rewards. The free track gives cosmetics and currency simply for playing.

PUBG vs Fortnite vs Warzone

  • PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS: The original battle royale. Slowest pace of the three, realistic military setting, deep looting and attachment systems, and a strong emphasis on positioning and sound. Longest average match times (25–35 minutes). Best for players who want a tactical, slow-burn battle royale.
  • Fortnite: Fastest pace and most accessible. Cartoon art style, defining building mechanic, and frequent live events. Best for younger players and anyone who wants a lighter tone with serious competitive depth.
  • Call of Duty: Warzone: Military setting, larger map sizes, loadout drops, Gulag second chance, and the closest to a traditional shooter among the three. Best for players coming from classic Call of Duty.

All three are free. PUBG rewards positioning and patience, Fortnite rewards mechanics and building, and Warzone rewards aim and map knowledge.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • ❌ Game won't launch. Verify files on Steam (right-click PUBG → Properties → Installed Files → Verify) or on Epic (Library → three dots → Verify). Re-download any corrupt files, then relaunch.
  • 🐌 Low FPS or stuttering. Lower "Anti-Aliasing" and "Post-Processing" in Settings → Graphics. Switch to Fullscreen (not Borderless). Update GPU drivers — outdated drivers are the most common cause.
  • 💾 Stuck on "Installing BattlEye" or anti-cheat error. Close the game completely, then run Steam or Epic as administrator. If it persists, reinstall BattlEye from Steamapps\common\PUBG\TslGame\Binaries\Win64\BattlEye.
  • 🔊 No game audio or voice chat not working. Confirm PUBG's output device in Windows Sound settings. For voice chat, check Settings → Audio → Voice Chat and set the correct input device.
  • 🎮 Controller not detected. PUBG supports controllers on PC, but plug in before launch. If Steam Input interferes, disable it via Steam → right-click PUBG → Properties → Controller.
  • ⚠️ Banned account or VAC error. PUBG uses BattlEye and its own anti-cheat. Contact Krafton support directly through the official site — there is no workaround for a legitimate ban.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I install PUBG on Steam or Epic?

Both give you the same game and share the same PC matchmaking pool — Steam and Epic players play together. Choose whichever launcher you already use; there is no gameplay difference. Your Krafton ID links progress across both storefronts.

Can I play PUBG with friends on consoles or mobile?

PUBG (PC) cannot play with console or mobile players. PC matchmaking is separate from console and mobile. On PC, Steam and Epic players share the same pool. On consoles, PlayStation and Xbox players can cross-play with each other, but not with PC or mobile. PUBG Mobile is a completely separate game.

Does PUBG have bots?

Yes. Normal (unranked) matches are filled with bots to keep queue times short and matches full, especially for newer players. Ranked matches are real players only. As your skill level rises, you will see fewer bots in Normal matches.

Is there a training mode in PUBG?

Yes — Basic Training is the main tutorial (17 chapters covering movement, looting, combat, Blue Zone survival, vehicle driving, and teammate revive), and there is also a Training Mode with a live shooting range where you can test every weapon for free.

How big is the PUBG download?

40 GB minimum available space; 50 GB recommended. Future updates add more, so budget 50–60 GB total on your drive to be safe, especially if you also play other large games.

Does PUBG support a controller on PC?

Yes, PUBG supports controllers on PC, and the game has native controller support. Most competitive players use keyboard and mouse, but controller is fully playable.
